School District Prepares for Health Insurance Rate Increase

The Derry Cooperative School District's school board fiscal advisory committee has its work cut out for it when it comes to cutting down the district's budget in the next school year.

Business Administrator Jane Simard announced at Monday night's meeting that the guaranteed maximum increase in the school district's health insurance rate came in at 19.9 percent for next year.

That means the district must budget a nearly 20 percent increase for its staff health insurance costs next year, as informed by the New Hampshire Local Government Center. more

Nutfield Senior Center to Begin Fundraising in Coming Weeks

Nutfield Senior Center President John Moody is proud to say that he now has a shovel-ready project.

Moody is waiting for federal money to be released in the coming weeks, before he begins the massive endeavor of fundraising approximately $1 million for a senior center in Derry.

A first for the community, the senior center will be a 5,000-square-foot addition to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry, which is currently equipped with a kitchen, function room, computer lab, gymnasium and lots of usable outdoor space. more

Pinkerton TechFest Aims to Spark Interest in Science and Technological Careers

As a high school engineering teacher and a co-advisor of the FIRST Robotics team at Pinkerton Academy, Joe Cunningham is surrounded by students interested in math and the sciences every day.

Still, Cunningham thought there was a need for more exposure to engineering, math and science among high school students.

That is why he and a committee of like-minded thinkers decided to put on the first New Hampshire TechFest, an all-day science and technology extravaganza that is chock full of learning opportunities, demonstrations and competitions.

"We want people to come here and have a hands-on experience," said Cunningham.

As Cunningham gave this interview, he watched members of the Pinkerton robotics team launch apples through the air with a recently constructed trebuchet. more
